boy what a thursday i had......
everything started off as usual.....get everyone up and out for work and school. did a little shopping at walmart then to superstore to get some cold meds since the pharmacy wasnt open yet at walmart. after the stores i went and got some breakfast and went home.
once home i sat at my breakfast while reading blogs and during that time i took some cold meds. i took the same meds i took last time i had a cold....sinutab extra strength (day tabs non drowsy).
about 20-30 mins after taking the meds my face started to feel really hot, my ears were burning up and i could hear my heart pounding. it kept getting worse and i was feeling my heart pounding in my chest really hard and fast.
i tried to kinda lay down to figure out what to do. i was home alone...hubby at work and he doesnt drive. i call him but it was at the exact time he was on morning break..left a voice mail to call me. so i tried to get my heart to slow down by relaxing...but anytime i would move even the slightest it would start pounding again. i called him back again and told him what i was doing next.
feeling slightly dizzy and now in a sweat i made a bad decision to drive myself to the emergency room that was 1/2 a mile to a mile away (5 mins). i got there fine and did my best to walk in without having a major breakdown. when i got the window i had a hard time talking and getting my thoughts together and got enough out for them to take me in right then to check me out.
i had the shakes so bad i had to hold my hands down and they were in fists. my skin was burning up but i was freezing inside. my blood pressure was ok...my skin had a little bit of redness to it and my body shook uncontrollably.
they did a heart trace (ecg?) and that was a little high but still in the normal range. they took my temperature and it was 35.1c (95f) when i got there. by the time i left it was back to normal. i have never had my temp go low before...that freaked me out (didnt know this until i was done) the doctor gave me some benedryl to counter-act the cold meds i took earlier. they had me there for about 2 hours in all.
the doctor says i had an allergic reaction to the decongestant. i have never had an allergy to anything before in my life and i was scared to death i was having a heart attack at 38.
through all this....hubby got there 5 mins or so after i did and was with me the whole time keeping me calm and trying to keep the mood light. im glad he got here thanks to one of our friends he works with. he stayed the rest of the day with me at home so when kiddo got home he would take care of her while i slept.
im still very shaken by all this and now im scared to take any meds. i normally dont take too many meds as it is ...so now im really freaked. i go to my regular doctor sometime this month and i will talk to him about all this and what he thinks about me taking any kind of cold meds wtih decongestants in them in the future.
all in all....im fine now...still a bit traumatized but im ok....work tonight so im resting all day today.
